Karen Viola Artworks
A bit about me
I spent my childhood in Vancouver and Toronto, Canada, then ventured to New York City to earn my BFA at Parsons School of Design. After college, I moved to Westchester to grow a family and invent innovative children’s books. Now I run my own business, Climbing Tree Studio and micro-publishing shop Climbing Tree Press. My art practice is ever-unfolding, as is my love of long walks in wild places. I have logged 701.9 miles on the Appalachian Trail, and counting.
My art practice
I find inspiration in the patterns and narrative of nature, humans included. My work is an alchemy of painting, drawing, and collage, gravitating often to handwritten script and personal ephemera. I am currently experimenting with paper, hand-dyed textiles, and unconventional book forms. My pieces invite all ages into a visceral, playful experience in an effort to nurture imagination, social connectivity, and stewardship of our natural world.
